Dear Fellow Owls,
Welcome back to another year at the University of the West Indies. I am honoured to serve as your Guild Representative for the academic year 2020/2021.
The school year has started, and I know that there are still some people experiencing high levels of anxiety, nervousness and uncertainty. As such, this address will provide some ways you can cope with online learning:
BE POSITIVE: This is easier said than done but try to wake up with an open mind. Continue the same routine you had when school was face to face; bathe, get dressed, eat breakfast and tackle each day one step at a time.
REDUCE DISTRACTIONS: Yes, I see you checking your Instagram and watching Netflix while you’re in your online lectures. STOP! Be focused during classes and use a quiet area in your home, so your parents or siblings know that class is in session.
TAKE BREAKS: We know sitting around your computer can be unbearable and your brain can get tired. Take a quick stretch or walk and come back re-energized and ready to learn.
MANAGE YOUR TIME: The illusion can be created that because classes are online, you can run a quick errand or you can get another activity done. This can be detrimental, therefore you must build a structure to incorporate all school and other activities in your schedule.
I know persons have given you all many tips but I choose these because even now online learning is a struggle for me and using the aforementioned tips it has been getting better, Therefore, I hope they can help you.
Lastly, the Faculty of Humanities and Education Guild Committee has been working tirelessly and selflessly to help everyone cope with our current situation and trying to make the virtual University experience better.
